“No AI” means four different things — decide which one you want
This is the question that makes the whole subject confusing, and almost nobody separates the four meanings. They have completely different answers.
- No AI-generated answer above the results. You want a page of links, not a paragraph written by a language model. This is what most people mean, and it is achievable.
- No machine learning anywhere in ranking. Effectively nobody can offer this and almost nobody is claiming to. Machine-learned ranking long predates the generative era — Yandex announced its MatrixNet ranking system in 2009 — and an engine that promises “no AI” has virtually never stopped using statistical models to order results. If this is your definition, the honest answer is that only very small keyword engines come close, and even they use learned heuristics.
- No AI-generated pages in the results. A different problem entirely, and a worsening one: the complaint is not the engine's summary but the machine-written pages the engine is indexing. Only partial mitigations exist.
- Your query is not sent to a model provider or used for training. A privacy question rather than an interface one, and the answer depends on the engine's contracts as much as its product.
The rest of this page deals mainly with the first meaning, and returns to the third and fourth at the end, because they are the ones people discover after they have already switched.
Engines with no AI answer layer at all
Marginalia Search is the cleanest answer on the whole page. It has no AI answers, no chat and no LLM summarisation, and this is a stated position rather than a missing feature — the project holds that “traditional information retrieval approaches still offer capabilities that have largely become lost,” and it is a keyword engine on purpose, with operators and filters, aimed at people who want to steer a query rather than ask a question. It crawls the web itself from Sweden, indexes a few hundred million documents, and deliberately downranks pages heavy with advertising, tracking and JavaScript. The honest limits: it cannot do news, shopping, maps or local, its coverage is English-focused, and it is run by one engineer. It is a discovery instrument, not a Google replacement, and it says so itself.
Mojeek is the most interesting case, because it refused publicly. On 9 September 2025 it published a post titled “Mojeek is Not an Answer Engine,” arguing that “Mojeek is about Search. AI is not the Answer.” That is a strategic refusal, not an unshipped roadmap item, and as of August 2026 its default surface is links. It crawls the web itself — its own About page gave 9 billion pages for 2025 — and has never resold another engine's results. Two caveats belong here rather than buried: Mojeek does offer result summarisation built on an open-weight Mistral model, added in 2025, so “no AI at all” overstates it; and this site could not confirm from a primary source whether that summarisation is on by default or has a persistent off switch. It is a summarisation utility over results, not a generative answer replacing them.
SearXNG ships no LLM answer engine, no chat and no AI summary as a core feature. It does have “answerers” and infoboxes, but those are deterministic lookups — calculations, Wikidata facts — and conflating them with generative AI is a common error. Because it is software you install rather than a website someone runs, you choose which engines it queries, which means you can build a metasearch page that never touches an AI surface. Two things to weigh: on a public instance you are trusting an anonymous operator with your queries, and upstream engines actively block instances, so results thin out unpredictably. There is also an irony worth knowing — SearXNG has become a favourite search backend for self-hosted AI agents, precisely because it offers a free search API. The software is AI-free; a great deal of the traffic hitting it is not.
Engines that have AI but let you switch it off
For most people this is the practical answer, because these engines have the coverage the AI-free ones lack.
DuckDuckGo offers the clearest opt-out any mainstream engine provides, and it is worth naming precisely: noai.duckduckgo.com, a dedicated endpoint that the company describes as “our AI-free search experience that automatically turns off all AI features and filters out AI-generated images — no settings required.” Set it as your browser's default and the question is closed. Per-feature toggles for its AI assistant and search summaries also exist in both search and browser settings. See DuckDuckGo's own documentation of the endpoint. The trade-off is the one that follows DuckDuckGo everywhere: its web links come from Bing, so you get Bing's coverage with the AI removed rather than a genuinely different index.
Brave Search exposes a setting to disable its AI summary, and unlike DuckDuckGo it is answering from its own index, so switching off the summary leaves you with independently crawled links rather than Microsoft's.
Kagi inverts the default: its AI is something you invoke rather than something imposed. Its Quick Answer summary is triggered by the user — historically by appending a question mark to a query — and does not fire on an ordinary search, and its assistant is a separate product you open deliberately. Being subscription-funded rather than advertising-funded, it also has no structural reason to fill the page with anything you did not ask for.
Qwant does not display AI-generated answers by default, a position independent reviewers confirmed as recently as June 2026. It launched an AI summary feature, Réponse Flash, in January 2026, built with more than twenty media partners and designed to push users toward the source sites — but it is not the default surface.
Presearch is worth a line for a structural reason: its chatbot is a separate paid product, and it has not welded mandatory AI summaries onto the results page, so the off-switch question does not arise. That is genuinely to its credit, whatever else is unresolved about the engine.
Getting plain links back on Google and Bing
Neither of the two big indexes offers a documented global off switch, and it is worth being exact about what does exist.
Google has no official account-level setting to disable AI Overviews. What it has is the Web filter — a “Web” tab added to the results page in May 2024, which returns plain links with the AI Overview and most other modules removed. The same filter can be reached by appending &udm=14 to a search URL, which is why that string has become shorthand for AI-free Google. Several browsers and extensions let you set a default search URL that carries it, so it can be made sticky in practice. Two honest caveats: it is a per-search filter rather than a preference, so Google can change or withdraw it at any time; and this site could not verify that any account-level opt-out has since been added.
Meanwhile the direction of travel on Google is unambiguous. AI Overviews rolled out to all US users in May 2024 and to more than a hundred countries by 28 October 2024. AI Mode, the conversational surface, arrived as a Search Labs experiment in March 2025 and by December 2025 was available in English in nearly 120 countries. On 27 January 2026 Gemini 3 became the default model for AI Overviews globally, with the “show more” control handing off directly into AI Mode's chat interface. As of August 2026 AI Mode is a tab alongside classic results rather than a replacement for them — but the classic results are the surface being progressively de-emphasised, not the other way round.
Bing is worse for this purpose: no user setting to fully disable its AI answers is documented, and none could be found as of August 2026. Copilot is embedded in the results page and is also a separate product line. If you want Bing's index without Bing's AI, the practical route is an engine that resells it and strips the layer — which is, in effect, what noai.duckduckgo.com is.
The other AI problem: results that are themselves machine-written
Many people who go looking for an AI-free search engine turn out to be objecting to something the engine did not generate. The complaint is that the pages the engine returns are machine-written — templated, confident, and wrong in ways that are hard to spot. No engine has solved this, and the ones with the best chance are not the ones you would expect.
Three partial mitigations exist today. DuckDuckGo added a setting in 2025 to filter AI-generated images out of image results, after user complaints, and its noai endpoint applies that filter automatically. Marginalia helps for a structural reason rather than a deliberate one: its ranking penalises heavy advertising, affiliate links, tracking and modern templated design, and treats age as a positive signal under the assumption that content which has survived is more likely to be worth reading — which happens to demote a great deal of recently mass-produced material. Brave's Goggles, user-written re-ranking filters that boost, demote or exclude whole sets of domains, let you build and share your own exclusion list, and they exist only because Brave controls its own index; no reseller can offer them.
The fourth meaning — whether your query reaches a model provider — is worth checking separately. DuckDuckGo proxies its AI features so the model provider does not receive user identity and states that chats are not used to train the underlying models, and its DuckAssistBot crawler documentation states that pages it fetches are not used to train AI models. Kagi is explicitly model-agnostic and lets you choose the vendor. Mojeek's summarisation uses an open-weight European model rather than a US API. These are meaningfully different arrangements and they are documented, unlike most claims in this area.
Be honest: the AI-free list is shrinking
Any page on this subject that does not say so is out of date within a year, so here is the trend, dated.
In 2023 an AI-free mainstream engine was the norm. Bing shipped a GPT-4 chatbot in February 2023 and Google's Search Generative Experience followed in May. By 2025 AI answers were the default surface on both. In 2026 the movement has continued in engines that were previously holdouts: Ecosia's chat assistant moved from OpenAI to a Mistral model in May 2026; Qwant launched Réponse Flash in January 2026; Yahoo returned to search with Scout, an AI answer engine, on 27 January 2026, grounded on Bing's index with a third-party model on top; and Google made Gemini 3 the default for AI Overviews worldwide the same month. Even Mojeek — the engine that published a manifesto against becoming an answer engine — added result summarisation in 2025.
The commercial logic is doing this, not fashion. AI answers keep users on the results page, and a page the user does not leave is a page the engine can monetise for longer. That incentive applies to every advertising-funded engine and does not apply to Marginalia, which has no advertising, or to Kagi, which is funded by subscriptions, or to SearXNG, which has no business model at all. That is not a coincidence, and it is the best predictor available of which options will still be AI-free in three years.
The practical arrangement, as of August 2026, is a small one: set noai.duckduckgo.com as your default if you want mainstream coverage without AI, keep Mojeek or Marginalia for the queries where you want an index Google and Microsoft do not control, and remember &udm=14 for the occasions when only Google will do. That is the whole of the honest answer, and it is a shorter one than it was two years ago.

Does DuckDuckGo use AI?
It does, and it is unusually clear about switching it off. DuckDuckGo offers AI summaries above results and an anonymised chat front end to third-party models, with per-feature toggles in both search and browser settings. It also runs noai.duckduckgo.com, which it describes as turning off all AI features and filtering out AI-generated images with no settings required. That endpoint is the most straightforward AI-free option any mainstream engine provides.
Does Mojeek use AI?
Barely, and deliberately. Mojeek published a post titled “Mojeek is Not an Answer Engine” on 9 September 2025, arguing that AI is not the answer to search, and its default surface remains a list of links. It does offer result summarisation built on an open-weight Mistral model, added in 2025 — a summarisation utility over results rather than a generative answer replacing them. Is there a search engine with no AI whatsoever?

The list is shrinking. Bing added a chatbot in February 2023, Google's AI Overviews rolled out through 2024 and made Gemini 3 the global default in January 2026, Yahoo returned with an AI answer engine that same month, Qwant added summaries in January 2026 and Ecosia switched its chat model in May 2026. The engines with no advertising incentive — Marginalia, subscription-funded Kagi, and SearXNG — are the ones most likely to still be AI-free in a few years.
