What Yahoo Japan search is, and where its results come from

Yahoo! JAPAN is the country's largest domestic web portal, offering news, auctions, shopping, finance, weather and Q&A, and its search box is one of the main ways Japanese users, especially older and desktop users, reach the web. It is operated by LY Corporation, the company that also runs the LINE messaging app.

Its verdict on this site is resold results. Since 2010 Yahoo! JAPAN's web search has run on Google's search engine and Google's search-advertising system. The results page looks like Yahoo's; the underlying web ranking is Google's. That is a neutral structural fact, documented in regulatory records.

The belief this page most needs to correct is that Japan is a market where Yahoo competes with Google. In brand terms it is. In index terms it is not. The two largest search brands in Japan both serve Google's index, which makes Japan, often described as a Yahoo market, a single-index market under two names.

Yahoo! JAPAN is also unrelated to the American Yahoo, which takes its web results from Microsoft's Bing. The "Yahoo!" name is used under licence, and Yahoo Japan has never been part of Yahoo Inc. of the United States.

How it gets its results: three eras

Yahoo! JAPAN's search has passed through three distinct supply arrangements since it went live on 1 April 1996.

Where Yahoo! JAPAN's web results came from
PeriodWeb results fromBasis
1996 to May 2004Third-party engines, including technology from gooWikipedia; supplier dates unconfirmed
May 2004 to 2010Yahoo Search Technology (YST), built by US YahooYahoo! JAPAN press release, 3 October 2005
2010 to todayGoogle's search engine and ad systemJFTC, 2010 and 2024; LY Corporation filing

In the first era Yahoo! Japan used technology from goo, "which itself used Google's technology," per Wikipedia. The second era is the only period in which Yahoo! JAPAN's results came from a Yahoo-built crawler and index. The company's own press release of 3 October 2005 states that it "fully adopted" YST in May 2004, and that from October 2005 YST's robot-search results would be shown first.

The third era began when US Yahoo agreed in July 2009 to take its search and ads from Microsoft. Yahoo! JAPAN, a separate company majority-controlled by SoftBank, was not bound by that alliance. It reviewed its options and on 27 July 2010 announced it would adopt Google's search engine and search-ad system for web, image, video and mobile search, concluding that "Google is the best at this point." LY Corporation's securities report for fiscal 2025 still lists that July 2010 decision in its corporate history.

Yahoo! JAPAN is not a bare pass-through. It may add its own information to the results page, it runs its own verticals and its Q&A service, Yahoo! Chiebukuro, and it runs its own advertising business. The organic web index, however, is Google's.

The regulatory record

The clearest evidence is the Japan Fair Trade Commission's own file.

2 December 2010: clearance. The JFTC found that Yahoo Japan's adoption of Google's technology "raises Google's share of technology of search engine etc. in Japan to about 90%." It nonetheless closed its review without further investigation, because the two companies would "independently operate their own online search services and online search advertising" and "totally separately hold information about advertisers and their bidding prices," under a two-year contract. Two cautions apply. The 90% is a 2010 share of search-engine technology, not a current query share. And the English text is a tentative translation; the Japanese original governs.

22 April 2024: commitments. The JFTC found that Google, which had supplied search-engine and search-advertising technology to Yahoo since 2010, restricted Yahoo's use of it for mobile syndication, meaning supplying search ads to other mobile sites and apps, from September 2015 to October 2022, after a contract amendment of 1 November 2014. It accepted Google's commitment not to restrict that supply for three years. This is a commitment decision: the JFTC states that approval does not mean Google violated the Antimonopoly Act, and the document gives no market figures. It confirms that Yahoo! JAPAN still ran on Google's technology fourteen years after the 2010 deal, and shows how a supplier can limit what a reseller does with resold results.

15 April 2025: cease-and-desist order. The JFTC ordered Google to stop requiring Android makers to preinstall Google Search and place it on the home screen as a condition of Google Play licensing or search-ad revenue share, finding the conduct since at least July 2020. It concerns Google, but it governs the device defaults through which Yahoo! JAPAN competes. The English text is a provisional translation, and the order gives counts of contracts, not shares of devices or searches.

No 2025 or 2026 statement by LY Corporation or Google ending or changing the arrangement has been found. That the contract terms are unchanged as of October 2026 is unconfirmed, but nothing indicates a switch.

Market share, and why the numbers disagree

As of September 2026, StatCounter's Japan series across all platforms shows Google at 59.27%, Bing at 31.41%, Yahoo! at 7.61%, DuckDuckGo at 0.72% and Yandex at 0.4%. Yahoo! stood at 6.96% the month before.

The Bing figure should not be presented as a measured query share. A 31% Bing share in Japan is far out of line with every regulator figure found. StatCounter's series is based on referrals to sites carrying its code, and in Japan it is likely affected by desktop and Edge traffic and possibly by bot traffic.

The official check comes from Japan's own government. In a 2021 submission to the OECD, Japan stated that "Google has a 77% market share for search engine in Japan" and a dominant position in search advertising "with a 70-80 % share." The submission gives no source or measurement date for the 77%, so it is best read as circa 2020 to 2021. It is Google's own share and excludes Yahoo! JAPAN.

The structural point is what matters. Add Yahoo! JAPAN's share to Google's and the proportion of Japanese searches answered from Google's index lands close to the JFTC's "about 90%" of 2010. Yahoo! JAPAN's share is not competition for Google's index. It sits on top of it.

Who runs it: LY Corporation, SoftBank and Naver

Yahoo! Japan was formed by Yahoo! and SoftBank in January 1996. Its operator today is LY Corporation (LINEヤフー株式会社), listed in Tokyo and formed on 1 October 2023 by merging Z Holdings, LINE Corporation, Yahoo Japan Corporation, Z Entertainment and Z Data. A Holdings, the joint venture of SoftBank Group and Korea's Naver Corporation, owns 63.6%.

One consequence of the merger reaches LINE users directly. From late June 2023 the LINE app's web search, LINE Search, switched to Yahoo! 検索, so LINE users in Japan also receive Google-sourced web results through Yahoo.

The business model is search advertising sold through Yahoo! JAPAN's own ad platform, plus portal display advertising and commerce. The defining feature of the 2010 deal is that Google supplies the engine and ad technology while Yahoo sells and prices its own ads and keeps advertiser data separate.

Data handling sits under Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information and the Telecommunications Business Act. After the LINE data leak of late 2023, for which reported counts conflict at about 520,000 and about 440,000 items, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications issued administrative guidance to LY Corporation twice, the second round on 16 April 2024.

AI features

LY Corporation has added generative-AI answers to Yahoo! 検索 results for how-to and definition queries, tested from October 2023, and on 20 April 2026 launched Agent i, an assistant reachable from the Yahoo! JAPAN search box and from LINE. Neither source located for this page names the model provider or the index the answers are grounded in, so whether the AI layer also draws on Google cannot be stated.

Who it suits, and common misconceptions

For a reader choosing an engine, Yahoo! JAPAN is Google's ranking in a Japanese portal wrapper, with Yahoo's own ads, Q&A and verticals around it. It suits users who want that portal, its news and Chiebukuro in one place. It is a poor choice for anyone seeking an alternative to Google's index, because it is not one: switching from Google to Yahoo! JAPAN changes the page around the results, not the engine that ranks them. It adds nothing to search diversity.

"Yahoo Japan is owned by Yahoo." No. It belongs to LY Corporation, controlled by SoftBank and Naver through A Holdings.

"Yahoo Japan has its own search engine." It did from 2004 to 2010, when it used YST, built by US Yahoo. Not since.

Frequently asked questions

Does Yahoo Japan use Google?

Yes. Yahoo! JAPAN has used Google's search engine and search-advertising technology since 2010. It announced the switch on 27 July 2010, and the Japan Fair Trade Commission cleared it on 2 December 2010. A 2024 JFTC decision confirms Google had been supplying the technology since 2010, and LY Corporation's fiscal 2025 securities report still records the arrangement in its history.

Does Yahoo Japan use Bing?

No. That confusion comes from the American Yahoo, which takes its results from Microsoft's Bing under a 2009 deal. Yahoo! JAPAN is a separate company, was not bound by that agreement, and chose Google in 2010. StatCounter shows Bing at 31.41% in Japan in September 2026, but that figure is out of line with every regulator figure found.

Who owns Yahoo Japan?

LY Corporation, a Tokyo-listed company formed on 1 October 2023 by merging Z Holdings, LINE, Yahoo Japan Corporation and two other units. A Holdings, a joint venture of SoftBank Group and Naver Corporation, owns 63.6%. Yahoo Japan has never been part of Yahoo Inc. of the United States; it uses the Yahoo! name under licence.

Is Yahoo Japan more popular than Google in Japan?

Not on any regulator figure found. Japan told the OECD in 2021 that Google held 77% of search, a figure with no stated source or date that excludes Yahoo. StatCounter put Yahoo! at 7.61% in September 2026. Either way, Yahoo! JAPAN's results come from Google's index, so its share does not represent a competing engine.

Did Yahoo Japan ever have its own search engine?

Partly. From May 2004 to 2010 it fully adopted Yahoo Search Technology, the crawler and index built by US Yahoo, according to its own 2005 press release. That is the only period in which its results came from a Yahoo-built index. Before 2004 it used third-party engines, including technology from goo, and since 2010 it has used Google.

What did the JFTC decide about Google and Yahoo Japan?

In 2010 it cleared the deal while warning it raised Google's share of Japanese search technology to about 90%. In April 2024 it accepted Google's commitment not to restrict Yahoo's mobile syndication of search ads, after finding restrictions from September 2015 to October 2022. The JFTC stated that approval does not mean Google violated the Antimonopoly Act.
